Dr. Roy Stevens

Board Member

Dr. Roy H. Stevens is Professor of Endodontology at Temple University’s Kornberg School of Dentistry, as well as Professor of Microbiology at Temple University’s Katz School of Medicine. In addition was named the Henry Isaiah Dorr Professor of Research at Temple University, and is Director of Temple’s Laboratory of Oral Infectious Diseases. Prior to his appointment at Temple, Dr. Stevens was Associate

Professor of Endodontology at Columbia University, Research Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania, and Lecturer in the Division of Endodontology at Albert Einstein Medical Center (Philadelphia). His professional training included a graduate program in Microbiology at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology (Rutgers University), from which he received an MS in Microbiology, a Dental (DDS) Degree from Columbia University, a General Practice Residency Program at Beth Israel Medical Center (New York), a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and an advanced dental training program in Endodontology, for which he received specialty certification, also at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Stevens’ interest in virus research was originally kindled during his graduate work in the virus research laboratory of Bob Simpson, at Rutgers’s Waksman Institute of Microbiology. Here, his graduate research focused upon the biology of a then little-known group of viruses, the Coronaviruses, which are actively being studied today, since three members of this group (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2) cause the highly lethal human diseases of SARS and MERS and Covid-19. His study of the Coronavirus prototype, Avian Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) culminated in the first description of some of the fundamental properties of this virus family, including the size and polarity of the single stranded RNA that composed the viral genome. Since then, Dr. Stevens’ research has primarily been concerned with oral microbiology, particularly focusing on viruses infecting oral bacteria. In this regard, he was the first to isolate a bacterial virus (phage phiAa) that infects strains of a periodontal pathogen (Actinobacillus/Aggregattibacter actinomycetemcomitans), and was also the first to isolate a bacterial virus (bacteriophage phiEf11) induced from bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis) recovered from infected root canals. Dr. Stevens has been the recipient of both NIH and industrial grants to study these oral bacterial viruses that he discovered. His research has resulted in the publication of numerous articles in such journals as: Infection and Immunity, Microbiology, The European Journal of Oral Science, Oral Microbiology and Immunology, The Journal of Oral Microbiology, The Federation of European Microbiology Societies Microbiology Letters, Microbial Pathogenesis, and others. His current research interests include virulence-related bacteriophage-mediated modifications of oral bacteria, and therapeutic potentials of bacterial viruses and their products.
