About West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
While West Philadelphia or “West Philly” is a famous area of the city, it doesn’t have any official boundaries. It is not, therefore, a traditionally incorporated region, as you find in most American urban areas.
In terms of population, West Philadelphia is smaller than many people imagine. Only around 215,000 people officially live within its rough area, close to the Schuylkill River. The community sits on an elevation, making it visible from other parts of the city as it snakes up to higher land.
West Philadelphia is racially diverse. The latest data suggest that 76.2 percent of people who live in the area are non-Hispanic black or African-Americans. A further 17.1 percent are white, with Latinos and American Indians making up another 4 percent of the population between them.
West Philadelphia has its origins in the eighteenth century as the central city grew, and more people migrated from the old world to Pennsylvania. The first known settler in the area was Andrew Hamilton, who bought a tract of land to the west of the Schuylkill River. After that came the Satterless military hospital, and other people soon followed in large numbers.
At the start of the 20th century, West Philadelphia was one of the most desirable places in the country to live, with property prices soaring. But after the race clashes of the 1960s and 1970s, it fell out of favor, and many of the area’s wealthy residents moved on to seek pastures new. Today, however, the region of the city is once again becoming a hub for business and has a thriving economy. Revitalization of the area kicked off in 2008 with the introduction of the Please Touch Museum and Philadelphia Zoo. Since then, the district has become more gentrified. Housing in the region is becoming more desirable.
